Sermon Series August 17th to August 31st

Why Church?

Welcome to our new sermon series, “Why Church?” as we explore the Biblical vision of church, together. We’re taking an honest look from a number of angles and, like Daniel’s love and self-identification with his people even in their guilt and failure, we’re going to see church as more than what we sometimes advertise it to be.

What is church to you? What advertisements have you seen?

Maybe instead of defining these as the church, we can see that these as a sign, evidence of it’s presence active and engaged in a place. Not all of these happen when the church is at work shining a light, but some of these things are often found. The church often finds place, like our place in this gym, a physical beacon of sanctuary, activity and invitation in a real neighbourhood, for good.

1. Why Church?

The work of God’s people was unique to that time and place, but an example for us. While they were waiting to go home, they made a home where they are, together. God’s people were to organize as a community, work together to carry on rhythms of worship and learning, all while working to serve, love, and bless, even in a foreign land, homeless or not, together or spread apart.

3. Why Church?

You are a part of something special, and Jesus knew it. He knew that if you would step into the life of the church, in it’s local expression, rooted in it’s place, alive to God’s presence and leading, you would find life. Why Church? Because Jesus knew that being this light on a hill would stretch you, but also give you hope and the belonging he wants you to experience today. Why Church? Because Jesus promised to be here, he’s the Good Shepherd, caring for you. Through us, as we trust.
