Compass and Sounding
Our sermon series, Compass & Sounding is an invitation for us to take out our navigation tools, learn how they work. Nautical navigation tools are great because they are used to find the way even when landmarks are gone. When a sailor cannot make out the sky from the sea, nautical navigational tools become vital. If a sailor goes out across the sea without knowing the direction or depth, they can find themselves circling, or crashed up on some rocks.
A faith that follows Jesus gives us the navigational tools we need to venture out, or find our way when we cannot see the way. Scripture does more than just give us do’s and don’ts as some think, rather it gives us ways to discern direction, to re-orient, and find our way through. It gives us waypoints, markers, depth finders, and sage advice for crossing the high seas of life. So no matter if the storms flood our boat, or darken the sky, we can become people of salty, rain soaked faith who know the great joy of the journey. We are safe.

Paul talks a lot about this stark directional difference, and what happens when travel with and without direction. He’s clear about something we know to be true: some directions we go harm us, and the things we allow to control us, could destroy us. I wish it wasn’t so, and Paul is blunt here. But he’s honest. He, too, says he struggles with those things that throw him off course. He knows dead ends.

When we meet the people of the Bible we learn a big lesson: they were all lost, afraid, lonely, foolish, holy, sinful, angry, and more. Each person, great and small, was part of God’s story, in spite of themselves. When we get the story of the Bible into us, not as a scorecard to match up against, but as the foundational story that shapes our lives, we begin to see God. Through each life, through each Psalm, in each prophetic unfolding, we find that it is a story of God for us to enter into. You are living a story right now, either one you bought into online, one your parents told you to follow, or maybe one your own sorrow keeps you circling around like an old record. May I encourage you to make God’s story your primary story?

Now, this is our question, are these laws, found in the Bible, our compass to follow and honour God? If so, are you following them? This might be the first time you’re hearing about this and wondering if you need to change your hairstyle and stop eating shellfish? After all, you want to follow God, right? Wouldn’t we set out these laws as our compass? Wouldn’t we hold each other to their high standards? If so, why have we not kicked out those those who like to plant mixed herbs in their garden!
